Therapeutic Gaming

Therapeutically Applied Tabletop Games

Therapy

Modern developmental therapy techniques are delivered through group gaming to help connect and engage. Critical Core is the specific social-skills intervention used, which was developed by Adam Davis and Adam Johns under the guidance of therapists and child psychiatrists.

Game

Critical Core utilizes adventuring, adversity and teamwork to prepare young heroes. Build meaningful relationships, emotional resilience, and frustration tolerance, all while enjoying a game together.

Campaign

Each campaign lasts for about 4 – 5 sessions scheduled with the same party members. Please be ready to make a time commitment for the full length of the campaign.

Who Is This For:

This game is for everyone. Meaning everyone one can play this game and find something enjoyable, challenging, and rewarding from this game.

This game was designed for children struggling with social issues. Specifically designed for children with autism who are trying to learn how they can interact socially with the world around them. Since the creation of Critical Core, there has been many more groups of children who have benefited from this game.

The benefits children have reported are they no longer feel isolated, they do not feel they are the only ones going through their specific issues. They find social support from others in the group.

What To Expect:

As a Game Master, Michael beings a natural sense of silly/goofiness to the game play. He makes the game inviting and light hearted. This allows the players to warm up and engage at their own pace. He will encourage the players to have fun and take risks within the game. He supports the players in achieving their therapeutic goals.

All group session will take place online on a platform called owlbear.rodeo. This is an online platform that is easy for players to access and navigate. This platform allows players to engage their characters for the group to see and interact with.

Each gaming session last for about 90 minutes. These session are typically scheduled weekly, but can be flexible based on the needs of the group. Each module lasts for about six sessions.
